Playa del Carmen is a solid place to learn and ride from November to May, the main wind season. We teach right on the beach at Coco Beach, a wide bay protected by the reef, where the water is mostly flat or lightly choppy. In those months we typically get kiteable wind four to five days a week, and October can add good sessions around passing storms.
Wind is never guaranteed, so the best trips combine the right season with a little flexibility. Here is how to plan one.
When to come
Aim for November to May. Every week is different, so there is no single “best” week to book. Inside the season, choose the dates that work for you and keep a few spare days. Read more in When Is the Wind Season in Playa del Carmen?
Between late autumn and early spring, cold fronts called nortes bring strong north wind. It blows offshore at Coco Beach, so on those days we run day trips to the Isla Blanca lagoon, north of Cancún. See What Are Nortes?
How many days to plan
- 3–4 days: enough for a first taste, with little margin if the wind takes a break.
- One week: a comfortable window for a beginner course.
- More than a week: the best chance of reaching independent riding. Most people need about 9 to 12 hours of lessons to get there (how long it takes).
How lessons work around the wind
You do not need to fix lesson times before you travel.
- Send us your travel dates, number of people and level on WhatsApp.
- We recommend a course and plan the sessions around the forecast.
- When good conditions are coming, we let you know in advance.
- You pay after your lesson. If there is no wind, the lesson moves to the next good day and you are not charged for it.

Check the wind before and during your trip

What to bring
Swimsuit, sunscreen and water. The kite, board, harness, wetsuit, helmet and flotation vest are included in lessons. Experienced riders can bring their own gear or rent and store equipment at the school.

Where we are
PDC Kiteboarding is on the beach at Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen, open daily from 9:30 to 17:30. We have been teaching kiteboarding here since 2007 as an official IKO center.
