Kitesurfing in Cancún: Where to Learn If You Are Staying in Cancún

kitesurf isla blanca

If you are staying in Cancún, the two places we teach kitesurfing are Coco Beach in Playa del Carmen, about an hour south, and the Isla Blanca lagoon, just north of Cancún. Which one you ride depends on the wind of the day, not on where your hotel is. The main season for both is November to May.

The simplest way to plan is to tell us your dates and where you are staying. We match each session to the spot where conditions are best that day.

Coco Beach, Playa del Carmen

This is our home beach and where most lessons happen. Coco Beach is a wide bay protected by the reef, with water that is mostly flat or lightly choppy. We have our own live wind station on the beach, so you can see what is blowing before you leave the hotel.

From Cancún, Playa del Carmen is roughly an hour’s drive down the coast.

Isla Blanca lagoon

Isla Blanca is a narrow strip of land north of Cancún, in the mainland part of the Isla Mujeres municipality, with the Caribbean on one side and the shallow Chacmuchuch lagoon on the other. When a norte brings north wind, it blows offshore at Coco Beach, so on those days we run our sessions at Isla Blanca instead.

The day trip leaves Playa del Carmen at 09:00, with four to five hours on the water and a lunch break at a kite club with restaurant and amenities. If you are based in Cancún, message us and we will tell you the best way to join on the day. Read What Are Nortes? for how these days work.

Which spot is better for you?

You do not have to choose in advance. The wind decides:

  • Wind blowing in from the sea: Coco Beach.
  • North wind (a norte): Isla Blanca.
  • No wind: wakeboarding at the cable park or the Foil Clinic with Boat.

What matters more is giving yourself enough days. Kitesurfing depends on wind, so a stay of a week inside the season gives you a much better chance of fitting in a full beginner course than two or three days.

How booking works from Cancún

  1. Send us your travel dates, where you are staying, number of people and level.
  2. We recommend a course and plan the sessions around the forecast.
  3. When good conditions are coming, we let you know which spot and what time.
  4. You pay after your lesson. No wind, no charge: the lesson moves to the next good day.

Lessons can be private or paired, with all equipment included. See kite lessons for courses and current prices.

Checking conditions from your hotel

Use Windguru or Windy for the days ahead and our Coco Beach station for what is blowing now. Look at direction as well as speed: north wind usually means an Isla Blanca day. Our guide to the Playa del Carmen wind forecast explains how to read both.
